Shri Yamunashtak

શ્રી યમુનાષ્ટક

In V.S. 1548 at the age of 13 years, Shri Mahaprabhuji arrived in Mathura during his first global tour and resided at Vishram Ghat on the bank of the Yamuna river. At this sacred place he composed Shri Yamunastakam — eight shlokas in Pruthvi Chhand describing Shri Yamunaji's divine nature, her eight-fold powers, and her boundless grace.

One of Shri Mahaprabhuji's 84 Vaishnavas, Kishoribai, chanted only two lines of Yamunastakam with complete faith — and Shri Yamunaji bestowed upon her all divine fruits. Such is the power of sincere devotion to these sacred verses.

Shloka 01

Namami Yamuna Maham, Sakal Siddhi Hetum Muda, Murari Padpankaj Sfuradamand, Renootkatam, Tatastha Nav Kanana, Prakat Mod Pushpambunaa, Suraa Sursu Poojitaha, Smara Pituh Shri Yambibhrateem

Meaning

Shri Yamunaji is capable of giving all kinds of achievements. Both her banks are full of glittering sand as soft as the lotus feet of Shri Murari Prabhu. Various gardens line her shores, filling her waters with the fragrance of flowers. She is worshipped by both divine and earthly devotees. I bow to this Shri Yamunaji with full love and devotion — she who is capable of fulfilling all the desires of the devotee in enjoying God's love.

Shloka 02

Kalind Girimastake, Pata Damand Poorojjwalaa, Vilas Gamanollasat, Prakatgand Shailonnata, Sagoshagantidantura, Samadhiroodh Dolottama, Mukund Rati Vardhinee, Jayati Padma Bandhoho Suta

Meaning

Shri Yamunaji flows with great enthusiasm from the top of Kalind mountain. The force of her current makes her waters appear as white as milk — as though she eagerly hastens to Vraj to meet Shri Krishna. Her movement resembles the swaying of the most magnificent of swings. She is the victorious daughter of the Sun, ever increasing love for Shri Mukund Prabhu in the hearts of her devotees.

Shloka 03

Bhuvam Bhuvana Pawaneem, Adhigatamane Kashwanaihi, Priyabhiriva Sevateam, Shuka Mayur Hansadibhihi, Tarang Bhuj Kankana, Prakat muktikavaluka, Nitambtat Sundareem, Namat Krushna Turya Priyam.

Meaning

Whenever Shri Yamunaji descends to earth from heaven, she blesses the whole world. Parrots, peacocks, and swans serve her like beloved companions. Shri Mahaprabhuji sees her waves as beautiful divine hands adorned with bangles, and the glittering sand as divine pearls. She was the beloved fourth queen of Shri Krishna. I bow to this beautiful one — whose banks shine with divine adornment.

Shloka 04

Anant Gunbhusite, Shiva Viranchi Devastute, Ghanaghan Nibhe Sada, Dhruva Parasharaa Bhistade, Vishuddha Mathura Tate, Sakal Gopgopi Vrute, Krupa Jaladhi Sanshrite, Mama Manha Sukham Bhavayah.

Meaning

O Shri Yamunaji — you are adorned with infinite divine qualities. Even the Gods Shiva and Brahma sing your praises. You granted the wishes of great devotees like Dhruv and Parasher. The holy city of Mathura rests upon your sacred banks. You are always surrounded by gopis and gopijanas, ever sheltered by Shri Krishna's blessings. O ocean of compassion — grant my mind peace and eternal happiness.

Yaya Charan Padmajaa, Muraripoho Priyam Bhavuka, Samaagamanto Bhavet, Sakal Siddhida Sevatam, Taya Sadrushtamiyat, Kamalja Spatnee Vayat, Hari Priya Kalindaya, Mansi Mesada Stheeyatam.

Meaning

Shri Gangaji, born of the Lord's lotus feet, became truly holy through her merging with Shri Yamunaji at Triveni Sangam. It is through this union that Gangaji became capable of granting all achievements to her devotees. Only Shri Laxmiji is truly comparable to Shri Yamunaji. I pray that this Yamunaji — who removes all worries and who is dearest to Shri Krishna — come and abide in my heart forever.

Meaning

O Shri Yamunaji — I bow to you fully in body and heart. Your divine character is truly wonderful. One who drinks your waters in Vraj need not fear the painful trials of death. Your devotees may become as beloved to Shri Krishna as the gopijanas who performed the Katyani Vrat. Even those of ill nature who drink your water receive your blessings — so great is your grace.

O Shri Yamunaji, beloved of Shri Mukund Prabhu — I pray that you grant me a divine body capable of participating in Shri Bhagavad Leela and serving you. Only you are capable of this gift. With such a body I may truly serve Shri Mukund Prabhu. And it is only through your merging with Shri Gangaji that the Pushtimargiya Vaishnavas have ever offered praise to Gangaji at all.
